Little did Karl Benz know in 1886 when he was granted a patent for his “Motorwagen” that he was starting a legacy and a legend that would last 120 plus years. Considered to be the first self propelled internal combustion engine vehicle it was a single cylinder four stroke of Karl Benz’s own design. An engineering masterpiece for 1886. Later that year Gottlieb Daimler and engineer Wilhelm Maybach converted a Stage Coach to petrol power also receiving a patent. By 1901 the first automobile with the Mercedes name was introduced. The name Mercedes came from Gottlieb Daimler’s first major customer who had a habit of naming automobiles after his daughters .The first automobile bearing the Mercedes Benz name was introduced in 1926. The merger would form the long running company known ad Daimler-Benz or Mercedes Benz.
