From a humble start in 1931 to one of the worlds supercars.
The company known as Porsche GMBH opened its doors in 1931. In the beginning they did not build any vehicles under their name but offered engineering and automotive consulting services. The first large contract was from the German government to develop the peoples car. That car would become the VW Beetle. The first car to bear the Porsche name was the Porsche 64 in 1939. It would use parts and components borrowed from the VW Beetle. When World War broke out Ferdinand Porsche and his factory was used for military production. Very few Porsche 64’s were built before the onset of WWII.

WW II leaves Porsche in rubble..Then the 356 changes everything.
By the end of World War II Germany and Porsche were in ruins. By 1947 Ferdinand Porsche’s son Ferry had decided to take over the company. He wanted to build his own car because “He couldn’t find a automobile he liked” In 1948 the 356 was born. First built in a closed down saw mill in Austria. The 356 was a legend from the start. A pure sports car, rugged and simple it would forge Porsche’s reputation in the USA.. In 1951 Ferdinand Porsche would die from complications from a stroke and his son Ferry Porsche would guide Porsche to supercar stardom.

911’s from 1965-1967 had a three inch shorter wheelbase than later 911’s. Porsche increased the wheelbase to help with “torque over steer” A problem that both scared and excited early 911 drivers..
The 911 replaces the 356 and Porsche goes from air to water.
By the early 1960’s the iconic 356 was becoming outdated and outclassed by other sports cars. In 1964 the child of Ferry Porsche the 911 was introduced. Purist’s gasped by the 911 was world ahead of the iconic 356. With its lusty air cooled rear mounted six cylinder engine it made for involved driving a legendary sounds. The 911 would develop quickly. Engine and suspension upgrades would tame the beast and make it a top seller. In 1975 the 930 or 911 Turbo was introduced. Like being “Shot from a cannon” Car and Driver magazine said in a road test in 1976. It would be the first of a long line of turbos from Porsche. In a total change of pace water cooled models like the 924,944 and 928 were brought to market in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The 944 offered a perfect 50/50 weight balance for superb handling.
